Dorrell Chappell Vickers
1919-2009


Dorrell Chappell Vickers, 90, of Colfax, Texas passed away on August 4, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dad was born February 15, 1919 in Nephi, Utah, to Thomas William and Louise Chappell Vickers. Dad was raised in Nephi and graduated from Nephi High School. After high school he was called to serve an LDS mission to the Netherlands. While in the Netherlands, the war in Europe began and he was re-assigned to the Northern States Mission.
After his mission, he served as a bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served in the China-Burma-India theater of operation flying the “Hump” and bombing missions in B-29s. After WWII ended he returned to Utah and completed a bachelors degree from the University of Utah. After college, Dad again served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Dad married Margery Garner in Tucson, Arizona, on January 14, 1943. They were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple later that year. They raised five children Rosann, Howard, Kaye, Kevin and Jeannie. Dad spent his career in the civil service as a procurement officer for the Department of Defense in Utah and Washington DC. Mom and Dad lived in Utah, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Virginia, Idaho and Colorado.
After his retirement from the civil service, Mom and Dad served three LDS missions together in the Netherlands, South Africa and London/Los Angeles. Dad served in many church capacities including Bishop, Stake president and full-time Regional Representative. He loved genealogy and spent countless hours doing name extraction for the LDS church. His hobbies mostly included family activities and he was also an avid fisherman traveling to Alaska several times.
Dad is survived by his children Rosann Blood of Ben Wheeler, TX; Howard (Sharon) of Vernal, UT; Kaye Geis (Greg) of Van, TX; and Kevin (Stephanie) of Ft. Worth, TX. Mom and Dad have 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Dad was proceeded in death by his parents, brother and sisters, daughter Jeannie Nelson and son-in-law David Blood.
Graveside services were held in Nephi, Utah, on August 7, 2009.

Dean LaVon Phillips, 91, passed away June 29, 2009.
He was born in Nephi, UT and was a resident of Arizona for the past 33 years, after retiring as a Captain for 36 years with TWA. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Dawn Carol Post and Terry Lee Phillips; grandchildren Samuel Robert Post, Stephen LaVon Post, Barbara Lenore Phillips and Dean Andrew Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his son Lt. Col. Dean Robert Phillips; daughter-in-law, Nancy Jonell Phillips and grandson, James O'Brien Post.
Private family services were held. Bring's Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway.
