A group of concerned citizens discussed with the Juab
County commissioners Monday the issue of safety at the large
arena at the Juab County Fairgrounds.
Mildred Garrett, Vera Paxman, Alice Rollins, and ?
Belliston told commissioners that there needed to be hand
rails in the bleachers to help people who had difficulty
climbing the stairs.
"Ina Morgan fell this year, and I had knee surgery,
and I cannot get up those bleachers," said Garrett.
She said that there were kind people in the audience
at the Ute Stampede who had helped her and others up the
stairs, but without their help, they would not have managed
to climb safely.
Chairman Neil Cook said that another group wanted the
West grandstand to be replaced, and if that went through,
hand rails would be included in the design.
Commissioner Val Jones said that he had talked with
Bob Day, who is over the fairgrounds, about installing hand
rails on part of the south side steel bleachers next year,
and then making that the handicapped section.
"We don't really know where to put them on the wood
side [west grandstand] because they're already so
darn narrow," said Jones. "Unless we take some seats out,
there's not a lot of room."
Cook said that he didn't know when the problem would
be fixed, but that the county realizes this is a serious
concern and they will put it on the list of things they will
look at seriously.
"If we possibly need to do a band-aid fix, like Val
said, that's something we can do," Cook said.
"Well, that's a start," said Paxman.
