Some alterations have been made to the drainage pipe
under the freeway in south west Nephi in the past and future
alterations may be made in the future.
Pipes under Interstate-15 were designed for the
removal of drainage water but contributed to the flood at
400 East 760 South which occurred when 0.8-inches of rain
fell in just 30 minutes.
"The rumor is that some cougar cages, placed in the
drains, caused the water to backup until the cages broke
loose and the water came all at once," said Greg Rowley,
council member who lives on the street.
Such systems are designed to keep wild animals from
following drains from mountains east of Nephi into populated
areas of the community.
Subdivision, as well as freeway drainage systems, said
Randy McKnight, city administrator, are designed by
engineers.
"The design was approved to carry all of the water
necessary," said McKnight.
However, the ditch leading from the freeway around the
subdivision proved to be inadequate in the particular
incident which flooded 760 South.
"In light of this experience," McKnight said, "the
drainage system may need some further alterations."
"We would like to thank the fire department for
washing down our street," said Rowley.
City crews also deserved thanks for their quick
response to the scene, for pumping water out of Kelly Lind's
basement and for bringing heavy equipment and a load of sand
to the street.
Area residents filled and placed sandbags to prevent
further problems from occurring during more rain storms
predicted.
