Rental rates for the Old Gym Recreation Center in Nephi have now been set.

Council members agreed to set the rates and make them effective immediately at Tuesday's council meeting.

Individual rooms, for a one-time use, will be rented for $10 per hour and require a $40 deposit.

"There are those in the community who just want to rent one of the rooms for a meeting or other single occasion," said Randy McKnight, city administrator. "Others just want to rent the floor."

The gymnasium floor will be rented for $15 per hour with a $40 deposit.

"Some want to run programs, such as dance classes, on a recurring basis," said McKnight. "Most want to rent rooms but some want to rent the gym floor."

Individual rooms will be rented for $10 per hour for a recurring use and will require a $200 deposit.

The gymnasium floor will be rented for $15 per hour for a recurring use and will require a $200 deposit.

"The larger deposit will be charged for a season," said McKnight.

Private recreation programs will rent the facilities for $15 per hour and will be required to pay a $200 deposit.

All deposits will be returned if the facilities are not damaged and if facilities are left clean.

"I think the rates correspond with the rates charged by other facilities," said McKnight."One of the comments, expressed earlier, is that none of the rates compete with private enterprise."

Council members do not want to run competition with the commercial sector.

Chad Brough, mayor, asked if the building needed to be re-keyed. He said he remembered when many individuals had unauthorized keys to the building which they had obtained by having a legitimate key copied.

"The building is opened and closed for those who use the building on a one time basis," said McKnight. "In addition, we now have master keys which cannot be copied."

"I have heard some grumbling about the rates," said Greg Rowley, council member. "The bathrooms need to be cleaner."

Jim Wilkey, council member, said it was his opinion that the bathrooms needed to be overhauled. They needed to be up-dated so that they could be kept clean.

"We now have a recreation director, Matt Bowles, and he is doing a good job," said Chad Brough, mayor. "He has taken pride in the building and has gone ahead and worked to make it a better place."

Bowles, he said, had also set rules for the use of the facility and had made certain the building was kept up to standard.

Brent Bowles, council member, said part of the reason for raising the rates was that money so collected could be used to improve the facility. Bathroom improvements would be a good place to begin, he said.

The council, after a question from Blair Painter, city recorder, determined that Painter will collect the rental fees and will hold the deposit checks of those using the facility on a one-time basis. After the building is inspected following the event, the check will be returned if all is well.

Checks for the seasonal rental deposit will be cashed immediately. The return, if deserved, will be made at the end of the season.
