Replacing windows on the south side of the county
building could be an expensive proposition with each window
priced at approximately $800.
While commissioners would like the job done to help
with heating and cooling expenses, to replace rotting wood
around the old-style windows and to add to the uniform look
of the building, the expense may have to be planned into a
future budget.
"There are 12 windows on the south side of the
building alone," said Bob Day, county building
superintendent. "That is the worst side."
Several different paint and glass shops had been
consulted, said Day. Proposals were different in the
approach to replacing the windows but costs did not vary
more than $50 per window.
"The costs of the windows were the installed price,"
he said.
One method involves wrapping the wood casings of the
present windows with aluminum and then placing the new
window in the opening. Another method would involve tearing
the casings out which represented a great deal of work.
That method would be a great deal more expensive and
was not the suggested method of any of the proposals.
If commissioners were to consider the replacement
method of wrapping the windows in aluminum, the result would
be much like the windows which were replaced years ago on
the west, or street-facing side of the building.
"The job, just on the south side of the building,
would cost approximately $8,700," said Day.
He said, if commissioners were to consider doing the
job this summer, it was, to his way of thinking, an expense
which should have been considered earlier in the year, at
budget setting time.
His department would act as agent for the project and
would pay the expense of the window replacement. The
department would than have money placed in the budget for
the cost.
It was agreed that something needs to be done about
the windows, but commissioners would consider the project
and determine whether or not to seek bids.
