Several public informational meetings have been scheduled
for the month of August to help citizens understand the Juab
Fire District Proposed Tax Levy.
Commissioners reviewed a schedule of seven meetings to
be held in Juab County at various community locations.
"There is no statutory requirement to have these
meetings. These are not public hearings," said David
Leavitt, county attorney. "They are public information
meetings and, thus, the format is different from that of a
public hearing. A public hearing is more formal."
Leavitt said, for example, the county could not expend
taxpayer money to pay for gas mileage for any employees to
attend the meetings. "The money of the government cannot be
used to campaign. Government cannot cross the line into
partisanship."
At the public information meetings both the pros and
cons must be presented. The public should be given the
opportunity to ask questions.
Leavitt also suggested that, since it was so important
for the public to be informed on the proposed tax levy for
the fire district, the fire departments of each of the
county's communities man a booth at the county fair to
explain the fire district.
"The fair would provide an excellent opportunity to
get the word out."
Public information meetings will be held at the Juab
County Commission chambers in Nephi at 7 p.m. on Aug. 2, at
Tintic High School in Eureka at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7, at Mona
Elementary School in Mona on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m., at Levan City
Hall in Levan on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m., At Rocky Ridge Community
Center at Rocky Ridge on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., at Nephi City
Council chambers in Nephi on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., and at Trout
Creek LDS Church at Trout Creek on Aug 25 at 7 p.m.
The question will be on the ballot in November.
