NVeda Marie Brough Hall
‘Aunt Marie’
1913-2009
Marie shared some last memories of a long life well lived on Saturday then passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at the home of a nephew in Nephi. It took congestive heart failure to finally stop this most resilient woman.
She was born in Nephi, Utah, on October 2, 1913 to Barton and Lucy Jane Carter Brough.
She was educated in Nephi schools and was a faithful member of the LDS church. She worked for defense contractors during WWII, first at Hanford, Washington, and later in Indiana. She also worked at businesses in Nephi and Salt Lake City.
She married John Ray Hall on August 22, 1951. They lived for many years in an early Nephi home that had been built by her grandparents. It was possibly the last home built within the old Nephi Fort walls. It was on the site of Marie’s present home. Unfortunately, Marie was not blessed with children. Those children would have been blessed in return with a great Mother.
Marie’s life was defined by her character. She was honest and straightforward. She was determined and very resourceful. She was not intimidated by hammer, saw or other tools if that’s what was needed to accomplish a task. She was polite and gracious to the very end of her life.
Marie dutifully cared for her father and mother in their later years. She did the same for husband, Ray, until his death in 1986 from heart problems. She was not a complainer and had the capacity to deal with life’s challenges and move forward. She lived alone in her home from the time of Ray’s death until shortly before her own. In all those years she took pride in her independence and only agreed to help from others if she absolutely needed it. She was doing her laundry, dishes, and other household chores nearly to the end. That was Marie. That was how she wanted it.
She did appreciate the kindness extended by her neighbors. She was grateful for the help she received from Home Health and Hospice and was especially fond of her regular caregivers Tiffany Hirst and Teresa Hooper. And thanks to Sherrie White for being with Marie on her last day of this life.
Marie is survived by sisters-in-law Mildred Nielson of Levan and Betty Grange of Vancouver, Washington, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Ray, her parents, older brother Rondo Barton Brough, and younger sister Ruby who died in childhood.
At Marie’s request their will be no viewing. Her funeral service will be on Thursday, July 2, at 12:00 noon at the Nephi 7th Ward Chapel. There will be a family prayer at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi. In lieu of flowers, Marie requests that donations might be made to the DUP Museum in Nephi. Funeral Director, Anderson Funeral Home, Nephi, Utah.
