A 15-year-old boy who was part of a group swimming at Burraston Ponds on Sunday afternoon, July 4, is in critical condition after a near drowning in the pond. The boy, whose name has not been released, was part of a group from the Ascent Boys Home, which is located north on Mona on Highway 91. The boys, and their supervisors, were swimming at the ponds when the accident occurred. According to Juab County Sheriff Alden Orme, the boy was swinging from a rope swing when he went under the water and did not re-surface. One of the supervisors jumped in to search for the boy, while another supervisor called 911. The boy was found and taken out of the water, but was not breathing. Civilians at the scene began immediate CPR. An East Juab ambulance from Mona's First Responders arrived within 5 minutes, followed by a second East Juab Ambulance. Juab County Search and Rescue divers were called, but canceled after the boy was found. Sheriff Orme and Cory Frampton from the Nephi City Police also responded to the scene. The ambulance crews found no vital signs in the victim, but continued to administer CPR. They were able to get the victim's heart beating. They transported the victim to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, where he was stabilized. Air Med Ambulance transported the victim to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. At press time, the victim was in critical condition on life support and in a coma. The incident is being investigated by Juab County Sheriff's Deputies Derek Walk and Ryan Nichols. |
