A 17-year-old boy was arrested Sunday, July 4, after a
chase with police in a stolen pickup truck.
The vehicle reached speeds of 105 mph, according to a
spokes person for the Utah Highway Patrol.
The boy was reported missing from a foster home in
Cedar City and law enforcement officials were looking for
him.
The youth, before leaving the foster home, was
expected to be taken to a Provo detention center, the UHP
statement said.
Meanwhile a pickup truck was stolen Saturday
night.
At 5:45 a.m. Sunday, the pickup's driver filled up at
a gas station in Beaver but did not pay.
Approximately two hours later, a UHP trooper spotted
the pickup on I 15 about 20 miles south of Nephi.
The trooper tried to stop the pickup about five miles
south of Nephi, but the driver refused to stop.
As a result, troopers with the UHP laid spikes across
the freeway the driver then swerved into the median and
avoided the spikes.
Minutes later, the pickup crossed the median and
traveled northbound in southbound lanes. The officers stayed
in northbound lanes to avoid endangering the public, the
statement said.
The pickup traveled about six miles in the opposite
lanes, then exited the freeway at Mona.
The juvenile driver turned onto a dirt road, where he
lost control and crashed the truck. The teen then fled on
foot.
He was captured in the foothills about 200 yards away
about 8:20 a.m., the statement said.
