A new Mona Town park is being constructed in an area
known locally as the Sand Holes.
The park is planned as a picnic area with green trees and
grass. To date, all the work at the site has been done by
volunteers with the labor and materials donated by
townspeople.
"Steve Kay, at no charge, covered all of the cement slabs
that had been dumped there in the past at no charge to the
town," said Darlene Fowkes, council member.
The Sand Holes was a dangerous play place before the
construction began and was filled with old chunks of
concrete hauled there from other sites. Nevertheless, young
people from the community would ride bikes over the rough
terrain.
"Gordon Newton is ready to install a sprinkling system at
the park," said Fowkes. She said it was her impression that
Newton was willing to furnish the pipe for the sprinkling
system and provide the labor necessary to install it.
"Is he assuming that we've appropriated any money for
that?" asked Doran Kay, council member.
"Apparently not," said Fowkes. "He told us the only thing
that would cost us is the water and the lights. That's what
he told Bryce (Lynn, mayor)."
Allen Pay, water master, said he would like to run an
eight-inch standpipe line inside the nearby Mona Fire
Station property before the sprinkling system for the park
was completed.
"A four-inch line could then be laid from the fire
station to the park connection," said Pay.
Fowkes said that five trees are being donated to the park
by the Robert Anderson family from the Christmas Tree Lot
south of Mona. In addition, Aspen trees will be planted on
the east side of the park.
