Edith Pickering
1933-2009
Edith McPherson Pickering’s earthly life ended on June 7, 2009. She passed on holding the hand of her beloved husband Nilan after 58 years of caring for one another. She died of heart failure after a brief stay at Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo. Her family appreciates the compassionate care she received there.
Edith was born in Mills Utah on March 23, 1933 to Seth LeRoy and Coquella Memmott McPherson. She attended schools in Nephi. She became the young bride of her sweetheart Nilan Wayne Pickering in Lampasas Texas on November 11, 1950 prior to his National Guard unit’s deployment to Korea. Nilan was given a 10 day leave on the occasion of the birth of their first son Kerry. After Nilan’s return from the war, their family grew with the addition of twins Jan and Julie and son Rod.
Edith and Nilan built and operated a family business called Picks Drive In. It opened in 1960 and was located at the site of what is now Reed’s drive in. They sold the business in 1967 due to Nilan’s ongoing problems from injuries incurred in the Korean War. Edith loved her flowers and gardening. In healthier years their yard was indeed beautiful. Edith enjoyed trips to Mesquite with her children and grandchildren but most of all she loved just being at home with Nilan.
Edith is greatly missed and will always be cherished by her husband, friend, and confidant Nilan. She leaves a huge void in the lives of her children Jan (Robert) Allred, Julie (Charles Bruce) Hall, and Rod Pickering. Son Kerry Wayne awaits her, having died tragically in an automobile accident at age 17. Edith was proud of her grandchildren Jade (Michelle) Jacobsen, Angie (Jason) Davis, Travis Allred, Jenya (Preston) Jones, Todd Allred, and Amberlee (Nick) Potter. She was blessed with 3 great-grandchildren. Deegan Potter, who loved playing with his cars and trucks with his great-grandmother, and new arrivals Avery Jones and Katie Davis. Edith’s faithful dog Scruffy holds vigil waiting for her return home. Family members will fill in for her as best they can.
Edith is also survived by her sisters Ethel Topley and Margaret (Rex) Hill and her brothers Seth (Arlene) McPherson and Tom (Donna) McPherson. Brothers-in-law Dean Lovaas and Clyde Ewell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Kerry, brother Mark Robbins and sisters Marianne, Colleen, and Florence.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Nephi 2nd Ward Chapel. A viewing will precede the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be at Vine Bluff Cemetery Nephi, where Edith’s earthly remains will be laid to rest alongside her son Kerry and her parents. |
