Ronald Gowers
Ronald Merle Gowers passed away peacefully on June 3,
2004 at the family home in Nephi. He was born September 25,
1911, the youngest son of Alfred J. and Matilda B. Gowers.
He resided in Nephi throughout his life except while serving
missions for the LDS Church in the Northern States Mission,
and in the Ohio Cleveland/ Pennsylvania Pittsburg Mission
and Tennessee Knoxville Mission with his wife of 70 years,
Louise Sorensen Gowers. Ronald and Louise were married April
17, 1934 in the Manti LDS Temple, where they also served two
Temple Service Missions together.
Ronald was a dry land wheat farmer and poultry man in
Juab County, and also worked as a carpenter in construction
in Nephi and as a machine operator at the Nephi Rubber
Works.
Ronald and Louise are known in Nephi for their lovely
home and yard, always a profusion of flowers, which was
recognized with the Salt Lake Tribune Civic Beautification
Award in 1993. They are also known for their many artistic
crafts which were frequently displayed and recognized at the
Juab County Fair.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Louise; three sons,
Ronald Blain (Gwen), Fred Lewis (JoAnn), Kent Lamar (Sheri);
and daughter, Myrel (Delbert) Mitchell; 15 grandchildren;
and 38 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his
parents, sister, seven brothers and one great-grandson,
Kenneth Blain Gowers.
Funeral services were held June 5, 2004 at the Nephi
Third Ward. Internment in Nephi Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi,
Utah.
Viola Lund
Viola Romero Lund 76, passed away June 2, 2004 in
Levan, Utah. She was born June 27, 1927 in Fairview, Utah,
to John Lawrence and Sylvia Mills Romero. She married Ove
Pershing Lund in Salt Lake City, April 27, 1945.
She was a homemaker and loved crafts, quilting and
putting together a good puzzle. She enjoyed being in the
outdoors.
She is survived by daughter, Patricia V.(Ray)
Westenskow of Gunnison; son, Ronald O. (Janice) Lund
of Park City; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren;
siblings, Lola Mae Truscott of Nephi, Ella Rodrigues of
Provo, Arvilla (Gerald) Goetz of Orem, Vernile
(Lorraine) Romero of Florida. She was preceded in death by
husband, Ove Pershing Lund; 2 grandchildren, Mindy and Lisa
Westenskow; siblings, Lawrence M.; Earl LeRoy; Dean;
Richard; Ruby; Dortha; Verna Sylvia.
Funeral services were held June 7, 2004 in the
Fountain Green 1st Ward Chapel. Interment in the Fountain
Green Cemetery.
John Vickers
John Ray "Jack" Vickers, age 85, died June 3, 2004 in
Murray, Utah. He was born Aug. 20, 1918 in Nephi, Utah, to
Vernon Hugh and Martha Ellen Howarth Vickers and a second
father, Lester B. Belliston. He married Billie Bernice
Campbell Sept. 2, 1948 in Brigham City, Utah. They were
later divorced. He married Ila B. Burr on Feb. 24, 1978 in
the Provo LDS Temple. Solemnized May 15, 1982 in the Salt
Lake Temple. She died July 9, 2000. He married Phyllis
Frandsen McKane on Aug. 31, 2002. They have been together
for nearly two years.
He attended schools in Nephi and graduated from Juab
High School in 1936. He attended Utah State Agricultural
College (now USU). He filled a mission for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the North Central
States Mission. He is a Veteran of World War II, having
served in New Guinea, Philippine Islands and Japan. He
graduated from the University of Utah in 1949 with a BA
degree. He worked for Buehner Block Co. for 14 years, and
also worked as an accountant, real estate agent, and broker
for Larco Realty. He served as high priest group leader,
ward clerk, stake executive secretary and high councilor in
the Anchorage, Alaska North Stake. Ila and he owned a motel
in Anchorage until 1993. They lived in South Jordan in 1982,
and spent winters in Mesa, Arizona.
He is survived by children, Kathryn V. Gruber of San
Antonio, Texas, Dian V. Pickarts of Brigham City, John C.
Vickers of South Jordan, Debra (Steven) Tollstrup of Sandy,
and Judy V. (Douglas) Burke of Santee, California; 11
grandchildren (one deceased); 11 great-grandchildren; Ila's
children: Ardith (Larry) Johnson of Kenai, Alaska, Richard
L. Burr of Pleasant Grove, Carolyn B. Park of Bluffdale, and
Delbert R. (Cecile) Burr of Lehi; Ila's 26 grandchildren and
47 great-grandchildren; a sister Reva Redd (Loile) Bailey of
Salt Lake City; brothers and sister, Vernon M. (Leora)
Belliston of Richland, Washington, Eunice B. (Fred) Bateman
of Salt Lake City, A. Garth (Beulah) Belliston of St.
George; Phyllis' children: Michael G. McKane of Panguitch,
William R. (Gwen) McKane of Mesa, Arizona, Brian L. (Ruth)
McKane of South Jordan (serving in the Argentina Buenos
Aires North Mission), Kathleen R. (Bruce) Mortensen of South
Jordan; 33 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, three
Belliston brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services were held June 7, 2004 in the South
Jordan 2nd Ward Chapel. Interment, Nephi City Cemetery,
Nephi, Utah.
