  • Law Enforcement gives report on Memorial Day weekend

Memorial weekend was mostly peaceful in Juab County.

The holiday was full of visitors but was fairly quiet, except for an attempted suicide at Little Sahara Sand Dunes and an out-of-control party in Chicken Creek Canyon.

"There were fewer people at the Sand Dunes than in year's past," said Alden Orme, Juab County Sheriff. "The weather was hot and most people seemed to want to visit cooler places. Boating, fishing and camping were popular."

Yuba Lake visitor's areas were full and visitors also went to Burraston Ponds and to Mona Reservoir. There were camps throughout the county, from the West Desert to Salt Creek Canyon.

The camps in Salt Creek Canyon were all full.

Several citations were issued throughout the county for underage drinking. Other citations, such as those issued for speeding and those issued for moving violations were issued.

"The freeway (I-15) remained busy during the weekend and the UHP provided officers to keep things safe for travelers along the freeway," he said.

Search and Rescue and Deputies were kept busy providing law enforcement during the holiday and units and officers patrolled along highways and throughout camping areas.

Orme said all law enforcement agencies should be thanked for keeping the holiday safe and for providing needed help in crises.

The suicide attempt occurred Sunday night when a teen, camping with his parents, became intoxicated and attempted to take his life.

Orem said the problem was handled by Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Dave Rumfield, two sheriff's deputies and a few members of the Juab County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Posse.

"The West Desert Ambulance EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) responded to the scene and, in a very professional manner, stabilized and transported the victim to Mt. View Medical Center in Payson," said Orme.

He said the teen was referred by a physician at the medical facility to continue treatment with the Crisis Intervention Team.

Deputies were also called to go to Chicken Creek near Levan to stop a problem reported there. It was reported that people in a camp had been shooting firearms.

"Several kegs of alcohol were confiscated at that site," said Orme. "Several citations were issued but firearms were not taken because the shooting had stopped and the guns had been put away by the time police arrived."

Orme said the holiday was a safe and fairly pleasant one in Juab County but much of the credit went to the various law enforcement officers who assisted.

"Memorial Day and Memorial weekend ended up being a really nice holiday in Juab County," said Orme.
