  • Vandals damage new sports park at Mona reservoir

The brand-spanking new county water sports park at Mona Reservoir sustained some vandalism recently.

"Some meat head, or meat heads, always likes to ruin things for everybody else," said Commission Chair Wm. Boyd Howarth.

Of course, in this case, the commission is not yet ready to throw the new baby out with the bath water, but commissioners are concerned.

Robert Day, buildings and ground superintendent for the county, said vandals had broken the handle on the men's restroom door and had driven over a fire pit.

"They had to drive over it with something pretty heavy," he said. The fire pit was crushed and the grill was broken.

In these incidents, it is not believed that the damage was accidental. Someone thought, or did not think, as the case may be, that driving over the fire pit was going to be fun and they did what was done, most likely, on purpose.

A door handle at a nearby restroom, one not on county property, was broken in a similar fashion, said Day.

"We are trying to make the area a good place to visit," said Howarth. "We have been working to make a boating park where those who enjoy water sports can come with their families and have a nice place to boat and to picnic."

Those contemplating driving over fire pits in the future will need to work a little harder to accomplish it.

"Let's put big rock around the picnic areas to protect them," said Howarth.

When he said, "big" rock, said Howarth, he was talking about the kind that is often used in forest areas to keep people from going where they are not wanted.

If the rock is moved, it would take a lot of hard work to displace it. That might be discouraging to the vandal although some may just think it is a challenge.

As for the aesthetics of the boating park, rock will just add to the rugged nature of the area.

The county road crew will haul the rock to the new park as soon as they can work it into the summer schedule.
