  • Mona City may take wait and see approach when it comes to recreation programs for the summer

In this time of uncertainty, cities are asking questions and it is no different in Mona—what should they do about summer recreation programs?

Amy Stanley, city council member, is over recreation for the city and she and Melinda Matheson, Mona Recreation Director, are wondering what they should do about organized sports programs for the remaining of the summer.

“Melinda would like to have some recreation but there are problems,” said Stanley.

Softball/baseball were canceled for the month of May, but there are other programs that were planned for June and on.

“What do we do after May?” she asked.

Some have already signed up for activities and what should be done about those fees if the programs cannot go forward? she asked.

Of course, refunds or extensions could be offered but will the future programs be allowed?

She said that Nephi Recreation was going ahead with sign-ups.

“We need to follow the laws,” said Randy Christensen, council member. “I would say, keep on planning. If the rest of the towns go forward, then we probably could.”

Even though gyms were being allowed to open, said Bill Mills, mayor, they were doing so with restrictions.

The patrons have to be 10-feet away from each other, sanitation of facilities needs to take place and the facilities have to be resanitized after each customer, he said.

They must still wear masks and should be careful to keep a social distance and wash hands.“I wonder if we should just tie recreation to when the parks are allowed to reopen?” asked Stanley.Even his medical doctor had not known how long the quarantine from some activities might last, said Mike Stringer, council member.

Jay Mecham, city council member, suggested watching to see what sister cities did about summer recreation programs.
