Nephi City Police found six pipe bombs in a Nephi home
Sunday.
The home was located at 595 South 100 West.
Police arrested 18-year-old Jordan Black on suspicion
of possession of an incendiary device.
He has since been charged with six counts of second
degree felony possession of an incendiary device. He will
appear in Fourth District Court on those charges.
"The mother discovered two of the bombs and called her
bishop for advice," said Nephi City Police Officer Bert
Wright. "Officers were then contacted."
Officers responded to the home shortly after 5:30 p.m.
after the Black's mother discovered two of the bombs in the
basement of the home, Wright said.
Four more were located in a shed at the end of the
carport.
Some residences around the home were evacuated as a
precaution, and the bombs were removed and destroyed by
Utah County bomb experts.
"We evacuated the residences close by," said Wright.
"Utah County had asked that one home on each side be
evacuated but we went deeper than that."
"We evacuated a safety zone around the home," Wright
said.
He said police were helped by the fact that it was the
evening of LDS Seminary graduation and many people were not
home but were in attendance at that ceremony.
However, the Nephi City Fire Department and the East
Juab Ambulance were called out. They remained on standby
about one block away in case they might be needed.
After the two bombs were removed, a further search of
the home was conducted. Police also found components for
making pipe bombs, a homemade detonation device and three
partially constructed pipe bombs, Wright said.
Black was taken to jail but has since posted bail.
"Our preliminary investigation indicates that the
bombs were to be blown up in the desert and were not
intended to harm anyone," said Wright.
In addition to the three-member Utah County Bomb
Squad, other officers called to help were members of the
Nephi City Police Department and the Juab County Sheriff's
Office.
