The Good Sams Club will hold their annual Samboree in
Nephi in 2001 if the board of directors of the group
approves a presentation at this year's June event.
Bill Orr, state director, and Charles Brewer, a local
member of the group, told Juab County Commissioners they
wanted to hold the event at the Juab County Fairgrounds next
year.
The event is scheduled for June 6, 7, 8, 9, and
10.
"The officers need to come in on the evening before we
open and set up," said Orr. He said there would be vendors
and they would need to have prepared locations to display
their offerings.
"We will have 300 rigs and will need two buildings,"
said Orr.
"I only have one concern," said Wm. Boyd Howarth,
commission chair. "We do not have a sewer system but are
connected to our own septic tank system. Too much heavy use
will plug the tank."
Orr said that was not a problem since all the members
have self contained units. "We run a dry camp and people
know to come empty."
If a particular unit filled up, they would travel to
one of the communities commercial dumping centers and empty
their holding tanks and then return to the fairgrounds.
In addition, most of those attending have their own
generators. However, there are some who are physically
disabled and, for medical reasons, needed to be connected to
respirators and other equipment. Since a stable source of
constant electricity is needed, those individuals will have
access to an electrical source provided by the county.
The group will use the west part of the fairgrounds
and will need approximately 1,200 parking places. "We need
approximately four spaces per each rig," he said.
The Good Sams have been holding their annual Samboree
at a northern-Utah site but are being forced to leave that
area because of finances. "We are being priced out and can
no longer afford unless we charge more per individual
members. The biggest majority are retired and on fixed
income," said Orr.
"Our commission is partial to seniors," said Joseph
Bernini, commission member. "We should be able to work
something out."
It was decided that the group will pay the county
$2,000 for use of the facilities. The money will be paid to
the county clerk prior to getting the keys to the
buildings.
Commissioners will talk to Nephi City officials and
see if they could, perhaps, arrange to have garbage picked
up from he dumpsters at the site on a more frequent
basis.
The group also plans to have a golf tournament during
the Samboree and will need to reserve the facilities with
the golf course.
