It might not be on the level of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, but Nephi City’s plan to use CDBG monies to rehabilitate homes in the area would still be quite welcome.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs.
Beginning in 1974, the CDBG program is one of the longest continuously run programs at Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The CDBG program provides annual grants on a formula basis to 1180 general units of local government and States. (www.hud.gov)
Although the city did not receive all the money they requested, they did receive $107,000.
“That can cover numerous types of projects,” said Mayor Mark Jones, “but the ones that we have decided to have precedence, in the event that there are more requests than we have money, are the ones that would save in utility costs in the home.”
Some of those projects, explained city administrator Randy McKnight, would include new windows, reshingling roofs, furnace upgrades, and insulation.
Projects are eligible only to owner-occupied homes as well as the low to moderate income families. Income will be verified through taxes and pay stubs.
“We need to make sure the money goes to those who are in most need,” Mayor Jones said.
McKnight said that there will be an application process that will be advertised through the newspaper at a later date. Friends and families of those who would qualify and benefit from these projects are encouraged to make them aware of the application.
