Better Newspaper Contest in Saint George on
Saturday. The Times-News won three first place
awards and two 2nd place awards in the contest
for group one papers.

The Times-News received five awards in the annual Better
Newspaper Contest held March 29-31 in St. George. The
newspaper competed in Group I, circulation of less than
2,500.
The newspaper received 1st place for Best News or Feature
Series which covered the skeletal remains found at a
construction site in Nephi. The series was written by Myrna
Trauntvein.
It received 1st place for Best R.O.P. Ad Campaign which
again featured the King's Nursery Spring / Mother's Day ads.
These ads were designed by Allan Gibson.
The newspaper received 1st place for Best Sports Page.
Design was by Allan Gibson, photos were by Heath Dopp.
The paper received 2nd place for Best Classified Page or
Pages which were set by Allan Gibson.
Another 2nd place honor was for Best Photo Page, designed
by Rebecca Dopp with photos by Heath and Rebecca Dopp and
Sean Gibson. This photo page took a look back on the Ute
Stampede.
There are four groups that compete for honors in the
contest. Group II are newspapers with circulation of
2,500-5,999. Group III has circulation of 6,000 and over.
Group IV are the daily newspapers.
Each newspaper that wins an award receives points. The
one with the most points receives the top award, General
Excellence, for their group. This year the Emery County
Progress received top honors in Group I.
