"You represent the greatest city in America and in the
world," said Mark Jones, Nephi City Mayor, as he discussed
the duties of the new Miss Nephi royalty with the young
women.
"I am proud to represent Nephi," he said.
Winners of the Miss Nephi 2006 contest were welcomed
to Nephi City Council meeting on Tuesday where 1st Attendant
Stephanie Farr and Miss Nephi Katelyn Peterson were given
the opportunity to talk to council members about duties.
Unable to attend was 2nd Attendant Melissa Wong.
"We look forward to supporting you this coming year,"
said Jones.
Peterson said she understood her duties to be
performing one community service project and representing
Nephi whenever called upon to do so.
Those duties, they said, included representing the
community in parades and at official functions to be
determined by the council.
"We are at your command," said Farr.
Communities around Nephi did expect that, since they
send their royalty to represent their communities in Nephi's
celebrations, that the royalty of Nephi will show up to help
them celebrate their celebrations, said Jones.
"People do expect you to show up to represent our
city," said Jim Wilkey, council member.
Since the young women had decided that they wanted to
represent the city, Jones said, by participating in the
contest to be selected royalty, the city would appreciate
them representing Nephi in a positive way.
"If we have a ceremony, be there," said Brent Bowles,
council member. "The more the merrier."
He also asked Peterson and Farr to look over last
year's float. It needed some work and it would be good if
they, along with members of the Miss Nephi Committee, could
look at it before parade season started in early June.
"It is probably about time that it had a good going
over," he said.
Wayne Jarrett, council member, suggested that
refurbishing the float might be considered a service
project.
It may be a good idea to find a responsible driver,
the young women were told. That would be someone who could
be counted on to drive safely to and from parades and who
would be willing to drive the float down many parade routes
during the summer.
Kent Park, council member, said the women should stay
in close contact with Robert Painter, who represents the
council by acting as liaison between the Miss Nephi
committee and the city.
"I would also like to thank you young ladies for a
beautiful evening and for the talents you ladies performed,"
said Painter.
He asked if there was anything the council could do to
encourage young people and to make growing up in Nephi a
better experience.
"I can't think of anything," said Peterson.
Jones suggested that as the young women go out and
about during the year of their reign that they sell Nephi in
a positive way as a good place to grow up.
"Go to all the parades you want to," said Bowles.
"Enjoy being our royalty for the coming year."
