There have been five home burglaries in Levan in the past
two weeks.
Juab County Sheriff David Carter said three of those
occurred two weeks ago and two occurred just this last
Saturday.
"Money seemed to be what the burglars were looking for
because that is what was taken in each of the burglaries,"
said Carter.
Two weeks ago, on a Friday, the burglar broke into two
of the three residences. In the third, a door appears to
have been left unlocked.
On Saturday, Mar. 31, the burglar broke into one home
and entered the garage of the other.
In all cases, damage caused by breaking into the homes
was minimal. In each of the burglaries, the thief seemed
intent on finding and taking cash.
"The burglar stole a purse from the garage and removed
the $25 in cash," said Carter. The purse was found a short
distance away from the home where it was taken.
At the other residence, said Carter, the thief also
scattered papers taken from the home. The papers were found
approximately one block away from the burglary site.
Carter said that on Friday, the burglar took $250 in
cash from one home where the thief also took a large
denomination check. However, the check had not, as of one
week later, shown up.
At another residence $700 was taken and at the third
residence an undetermined amount of cash was taken.
"Rolls of quarters were taken and other loose change
was stolen," said Carter.
The burglaries may, or may not be, connected to those
which have been reported in Nephi recently.
"There are so many individuals who are committing
crimes in an effort to get cash to purchase drugs," he said,
"that we may have an individual or several individuals who
are breaking into homes. They might be the same individuals
or individual who is doing the breaking and entering in
Nephi."
On the other hand, he said, there may be no
connection.
"We are asking citizens to be on the alert for any
suspicious behavior," Carter said. "If anyone notices a
strange car or individuals who are acting in a suspicious
manner, they should call the sheriff's office and report the
activity."
That way, he said, the Sheriff's deputies could
respond and check out the suspicious behavior before a
burglary occurs.
"We really need the help of citizens in calling us to
report any activity that concerns them."
