STATE WINNERS • Pictured L to R: Staten Shepherd, Andrew Woodland, Morgan Peay, Gage England, Trevor Hall, Sadie Winn, Joe Garrett, Tawny Cieslak. The Conduct of Chapter Meetings Leadership Development Event (LDE) is an FFA competition used to implement parliamentary procedure as young members become skilled to conduct efficient meetings and build their ability to communicate. The design of this LDE challenges a team of seven students to demonstrate correct use of FFA opening and closing ceremonies. Students communicate and participate effectively as a team while growing skills in effective decision making. Members assume various officer duties (Trevor Hall-president, Tawny Cieslak-vice president, Sadie Winn-secretary, Andrew Woodland-treasurer, Staten Shepherd-reporter, Gage England-sentinel and Morgan Peay-advisor) and present a demonstration that is evaluated by a team of judges followed by oral questions. Additionally, each participant is challenged by a written exam about officer duties, meeting room preparation and parliamentary procedure. An assigned main motion is provided to each floor member and the chair for a one minute preparation. The team must then handle that motion by following Robert’s Rules of Order of Parliamentary Law to reach a conclusion within the permitted thirteen-minute timeframe. Students are evaluated as a team on their voice, poise, and expression and then individually on debates and parliamentary motions. This team of 8th grade FFA members from Juab Jr. High has shown excellence in their abilities to work together as a team while implementing parliamentary procedure. They won the Area 7 contest in January and placed 2nd at the Area Showdown Invitational in Tremonton. They continued to work and enhance their mindset and skills to be announced as the State winning team at the 93rd Utah FFA Association State Convention. We would like to thank all those that helped along the way including administration, past team members, classmates and fellow FFA members, teachers and advisors and especially parents. The team will advance to the National level contest to compete with other state winning Conduct teams from across the nation. Congratulations! |
