  • Juab High School Sterling Scholars ready for finals


Juab High School's Sterling Scholars have been working hard preparing for the final round of the competition of the Sterling Scholars of Central Utah program. Judging of portfolios and interviews was yesterday, and the Awards Program will be held Tuesday, March 15, at North Sanpete High School in Mt. Pleasant. The program begins at 7:00 with portfolios on display beginning at 5:00.

Juab's Sterling Scholars are as follows:

Zac Barr, son of Richard and Sally Barr, Nephi, represents the JHS Math Department. Zac is Math Club president and will compete with the Math Team at competitions this spring. A Youth and Families with Promise mentor, Zac is also involved in tutoring. He plays football, runs track, and writes music for his own rock group, "The Crew." Zac plans to use his math skills to pursue a career in astronomy. He is ranked in the upper 10% of his class with a 3.9 GPA.

Caitlin Holladay, daughter of Clark and Kristina Holladay, Nephi, is the English Sterling Scholar. Caitlin is The Clarion Editor and a teen reporter for the Deseret News. She has been named one of six Utah finalists in the NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. She is NHS president and was a Girls' State Representative, where she was on the Press Corps. Caitlin is involved in Youth Court, Friends of the Nephi City Library, Literary Magazine, drama, speech, chorus, and HOSA. Caitlin is a published poet who scripted Michael McLean's "Forgotten Carols" for a community production and has helped with Art in the Park. Caitlin has an ACT score of 35 in English.

Matt Howard, son of Carl and Sheila Howard, Nephi, is the Social Science Sterling Scholar. Matt is Senior Class president and Nephi Youth Court Senior judge. He was assistant Campaign Manager for Senator Darin G. Peterson and attended Boys' State. He designed an Olympic Pin for the 2002 Winter Olympics and placed first in Region History Fair in 2001 and 2004. Matt has judged geography bees and history fairs and is Clarion business manager. In addition to coaching Jr. Jazz, Matt played football and runs track. Matt is an Eagle Scout.

Ashley Clark, daughter of David and Melinda Clark, Mona, represents the JHS Science Department. Ashley has taken every science class JHS offers. She directed the Mona Elementary Science Fair and was a 5th grade science tutor. She has worked with the CVMC Imaging Department and has sponsored several blood drives. Ashley is Senior Class Historian, photographer for The Clarion, a Youth and Families with Promise mentor, and a member of HOSA and the National Honor Society. She has also been a captain for her basketball, volleyball, and softball teams and is an active member of GAA. Ashley has a 29 ACT composite with scores of 31 in English and 33 in Reading.

Milinda Esplin, daughter of J. Lynn and Tana Esplin, Mona, is the Speech and Drama Sterling Scholar. She has been a participant in JHS dramatic and music productions since her Freshman year. She has also participated in the Emerson-Smith College drama program and the Young Living Heritage Park productions. She was named 2A Best Character Actress in 2003 and has received Superior rankings at State events in both speech and drama, most recently receiving a 1st place award for her Oratory at Region Speech Festival last week. She sings and dances as well and is a regular at State Solo and Ensemble Festival. She is Historian of the National Honor Society and referees soccer in her spare time.

Jade Ellison, daughter of Joe and Wendy Ellison, Nephi, is the Dance Sterling Scholar. A ballroom dancer who has won many awards in Utah Valley competitions and has performed in California and Nevada, Jade has also done choreography for local events, including school musicals and other performances. She has performed in many school plays and drama competitions and has also been student director. A member of the JHS chorus, Jade has performed at Region and State Festivals.

Matye Ingram, daughter of Rhet and Patye Ingram, Nephi, is the Visual Arts Sterling Scholar. She re-established the art club this year and is president of Etch N' Sketch. She has been actively involved in the Art in the Park program, sponsored by the Juab Fine Arts Council. She has promoted art in the elementary schools with coloring contests and has done advertising for school and community events and created scenery for drama productions. Matye is on the Clarion staff and has been a member of both drill and cheer teams. Her artwork as been accepted into the SUU Rural High School Art Show and was submitted to Springville High School Art Show. She has also received many ribbons at JHS and Juab County shows.

Kayla Rice, daughter of Bill and Kathy Rice, Nephi, is the Music Sterling Scholar. Kayla is the band president and participates in all the JHS bands. Furthermore, she has been a member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra for 5 years. She was selected for All-State Band in 2003 and 2004. She has earned gold medals at State Solo and Ensemble Festivals. In addition to her instrumental accomplishments, playing both clarinet and saxophone, Kayla gives clarinet and piano lessons. She is also a member of the JHS Chorus and is an accompanist for that group. Beyond her music accomplishments, Kayla is NHS VP, a member of HOSA and the Math Team, and has participated in school musicals.

Laura Peeler, daughter of William and Evelyn Peeler, Levan, is the representative for Business and Marketing Education. Laura is Business Editor for the yearbook, Treasurer of the National Honor Society. and, as FBLA President, is currently putting the finishing touches on Juab High School's Career Day. Laura is a peer tutor and has been on the top-ranked Juab math teams. Laura also records data for the Levan Cemetery. She is in the top 10% of her class with 3.9 GPA and will complete her Associate Degree this summer. She has an ACT composite of 29. with a 31 in English and 30 in Reading.

Ashley Day, daughter of Todd and Cheryl Day, Nephi, is the Trade and Technical Education Sterling Scholar. Active in Juab High School's technical education programs, Ashley is the Mt. Nebo FFA Secretary and High School Rodeo Secretary, She is also involved in the 4H Horse program as both a participant and an instructor and has served on the 4H Teen Council. Ashley is also the Head Matmaid for the JHS Wrestling program, and she plays JHS and community softball.

Rebecca Stubbs, daughter of Howard and Pamela Stubbs, Mona, is the Family and Consumer Science Sterling Scholar. Becky is president of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America, publicity manager of NHS, president of the Culinary Art Club, and a member of the Juab School District Health and Advisory Committee. She also runs track. She was assistant Drill Mistress and was named All-Region and Academic All-State in Drill. Becky has created costumes for school and community productions and is the teacher's assistant to the Family and Consumer Science teacher. She also works with her family's catering business.

Brady Harris, son Layne and Shanna Harris, Nephi, is the Computer and Information Technology Sterling Scholar. Brady is JHS Student Body VP and the JHS representative for the United States Senate Youth program. Brady manages his own company, LAN Utah, which provides computer and networking services and hosts large-scale computer-gaming events. He also builds web sites and has developed intranet programs for JHS and community organizations. As Student Technical Director, he overhauled Juab's auditorium lighting and sound systems. He is also the technology advisor for The Clarion.

Lindsay Hart, daughter of Steve and Kathy Hart, is Juab's choice for General Scholarship. Lindsay is Student Body Publicity Manager and NHS Secretary. She is involved in music, speech, and drama productions, recently qualifying for State in both music and speech competitions. Lindsay received the "Crystal Eagle" Outstanding Citizenship Award given by UVSC and is the school nominee for the nationwide National Honor Society Scholarship. She has a college GPA of 4.0 with more than 30 credits and is currently ranked 2nd in her class. In addition to academics, Lindsay is also a member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra and Choir that will perform in Carnegie Hall this spring.

"These Sterling Scholars have spent many hours of service for their school and community," said Lorraine Wallace, Sterling Scholar Advisor. "They should be congratulated and commended for being such fine examples of the youth in our community."

Students are competing with eleven other schools in Central Utah for scholarships and cash prizes. The program is funded by school districts and local businesses.
