Mayor Bob Shepherd gave an impromptu State of the Town
address at the monthly meeting March 12. Levan resident
Heber Taylor asked the Mayor to inform the public on how
Levan is doing financially and otherwise.
Mayor Shepherd reported that as of now Levan has a
surplus of $20,000. The council started their current
administration with $0 and many delinquent bills in January
of 2002 which had carried over from the previous
administration.
The Mayor also said that the town is current on all
their bills. He stated that several bonds have been paid off
as well. A $70,000 electric bond payment has been paid off,
but the town is not receiving $5,000 from UMPA anymore to
make that payment. They are only getting $400 for UMPA to
service the hydros.
The council has updated their computer system with the
Caselle program. Mayor Shepherd said that the old system
couldn't do the job. He reported that the town has paid off
Caselle a sum of around $16,000.
The town has also paid off a line truck from Nephi
City for $12,000. They put about $10,000 into the garbage
truck.
The town is also implementing a new garbage route
which should start in the next few months. Paul Mangelson
said that sixty-seven residents will have to move their cans
to the opposite sides of the road, but the new route should
save on the wear-and-tear on the truck.
The council has put into effect new ordinances to
cover rental unit skips and who should cover the delinquent
charges.
Mayor Shepherd also reported that there have only been
a few instances where someone went a night without power
before paying their bill in full. He said that most
delinquencies were taken care of right away.
Some of the council's goals for the next year are to
improve the cemetery and get all the plot information
updated and corrected. The council wanted to commend Ralph
Brooks for all that he has done on improving the cemetery.
Mayor Shepherd said that funds haven't been used for the
perpetual fund like they should have and that the council
needs to work on getting that corrected.
The town also has a certified ambulance service with
certified EMTs that can transport patients at reasonable
costs. The council also wants to oil some of the roads this
year.
