M. Clark Newell
M. Clark Newell died March 3, 2003 at his home in Mona,
Utah. He was born July 4,1917 in Mona to G.A. and Mary Jane
Kay Newell. Clark received his nick-name "Sam" at birth
because he was born 2 months after the U.S. declared war on
Germany in WWI.
He graduated from Juab High School and Seminary.
Graduated from BYU with a normal degree and taught for two
years in the Uintah School District.
He served a mission to the Eastern States for the
Church of Jesus Christ for Latter-day Saints. While serving
on his mission, World War II began. After his mission, he
enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and became an officer
and pilot. He flew combat cargo transports in India, Burma,
and China, including flying over the Hump into China. After
the war, he graduated with Bachelors and Masters Degrees
from Brigham Young University.
He was principal and teacher at Levan School. He
taught at Juab High School and served as principal for 17
years. He served as Juab School District clerk for a couple
of years, and was appointed acting-superintendent for two
years after Superintendent Menlove's accident. He served as
superintendent of Juab School District for 10 years before
retiring in 1983.
He was active in the church and community: Mona Town
Board, Lions Club (including Zone Chairman), class teachers,
High Priest group leader, served in the Utah House of
Representatives, and was Grand Marshal of the Ute Stampede
Mammoth Parade.
He married Helen Carter Norton on Oct. 2, 1947, in
Spring Lake, Utah, who had two children: Saundra (Fred)
Lawrence of Spanish Fork, and Ronald (Shirley) Newell of
Nephi. Clark and Helen had two children, Mary Jane (Blair)
Warner of Payson, and Paula (Mark) Soderborg of Ephraim.
Clark married Shirleen Slack on June 20, 1960, in the St.
George Temple. They have two children, Matthew Clark (Rea)
Newell of Decatur, Illinois, and Allyn (Mark) Malan of North
Ogden. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren; 23
great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was
preceded in death by his wife Helen; 1 great-grandchild;
brothers and sisters, Rulon K. Newell, Lela V. Bryan, Lona
Warner, Donna Gannon, William Newell, and Harry K.
Newell.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, at 11
a.m. in the Mona LDS Chapel. Friends may visit Thursday
evening, 6-8 p.m., at the Anderson Funeral Home, Nephi, and
one hour prior to services at the church. Burial in the Mona
Cemetery.
