Several local EMTs and firemen were injured Saturday morning as the result of an accident which occurred while they were offering aid to an injured individual when another vehicle slid into the scene of the rescue.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Hoby Metz, said that the chain of events began when Vehicle Number 1, driven by Stephanie Moore, 29, Orem, was traveling northbound on I-15 near Exit 225.
“Snow had accumulated on I-15 in that area and the bridge structure was icy,” said Metz.
As Moore’s vehicle traveled over the structure, the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the roadway to the right, overturned in the grass area and came to rest on the drivers side.
“EMS personnel responded to the scene and began extrication and patient care,” said Metz.
At that point, Vehicle Number 2, also northbound, approached the crash scene area and the driver, Cheryl Crummett, 30, Layton, lost control of the vehicle she was driving on the bridge structure as well.
“Vehicle Number 2, driven by Crummett, went off the roadway to the right in the same location and crashed into vehicle Number 1, the vehicle driven by Moore,” said Metz.
“Vehicle Number 2 also impacted at least 4 EMS personnel,” said Metz.
Brett Ostler, a fireman, received serious injuries and was transported to Utah Regional Medical Center (UVRMC), Provo, for arm and head injury.
“He is still hospitalized,” said Metz.
Also injured were Andrea Ostler, an EMT, who received minor injuries and was transported to Central Valley Medical Center (CVMC), where she was admitted overnight; Carolynn Ford, an EMT, who received minor injuries and was transported to CVM Center and later released; and Dallin Mangels, and EMT, who received minor injuries and was transported to CVMC and later released.
“There were other Fireman and EMT’s who were impacted by the crash of the second vehicle,” said Metz. “Their names were Hank Peay, Gilbert Peay, John Ford, and others,” said Metz. “There was also a Micah Sperry (fireman), who was injured as well.”
Moore and Crummett were also transported to CVMC. Both received minor injuries in the accident.
