  • Rancher want commission to see problems at his ranch

A local rancher wants members of the county road department and county commissioners to travel to his ranch south of Nephi to look at some of the problems he has with fences, roads and gates.

Several years ago, said Dalley, he put some of his land into conservation grass. Now, he said, he needs some gates to protect the land from cattle.

"We need some gates put in to protect our property," he said. "One of the gates north of our yard would be closed."

Robert Steele, county commissioner, said he thought there would be no problem in Dalley having gates in some areas as long as they were not locked. Many ranchers used gates which could be opened and closed after a traveler had passed through.

"In my opinion, it would be wise to look at the property in question," said Joseph Bernini, commissioner.

Nephi Sandstone had improved one of the roads discussed. The road had been realigned and enhanced. However, some piles of gravel needed to be smoothed out.

In addition, Dalley said, he has one short cattle guard and would like a longer one, he said.

The county road crew can build an extension to the cattle guard in question, said Lynn Ingram, who was representing the road department. The cattle guard is made of drill steel and can be fashioned in the shop although some new cattle guards were recently ordered from a manufacturer.

"Since this cattle guard was put in we have been putting in wider cattle guards," said Ingram.

Dalley also wants to put an 8-foot fence between his property and that of his neighbor, Dale Dorius.

The road will need to be constructed beyond the county prospective use.

"I will look at the requirements and see how far the fence must be from an existing road," said David Leavitt, county attorney. He will also determine what height fence is permitted.

Dalley said there was also a cement box, belonging to the county, which fills and creates problems for him.

Wm. Boyd Howarth, county commission chair, said he would like to review the physical conditions of the area by making a personal visit before any decisions were made as to what should or should not be done.

It was decided that Ted Haynes, Lynn Ingram, and Kevin Snow, all representing the county road department, would tour the area and look at the roads in question. They will then report back to the county commission on their findings before any action is taken.
