Should the Red Cliffs Elementary school being proposed
for construction in Nephi have a larger gym to handle
community events?
Juab School District board members, and city and
county officials have begun discussions about just that
question.
"Two hundred extra seats equals $20,000," said
Superintendent Kirk Wright during board meeting on
Wednesday.
More funds would be needed to add to the floor both in
size and in the quality with either a rubberized or a hard
wood floor that would stand up to the increased use.
"The district board of education has indicated their
willingness to talk but we have expressed that the city and
the county should put in some of the funds to pay for the
extras needed," said Wright.
He said that, in addition to the extra space required
to meet the requests, the bleachers as well as the floors
would need to be upgraded.
"We will pay for the space but they must help with the
rest," said Wright.
The 1,500 square-foot gym is much more footage than is
usually found in an elementary school, he said.
If the gym cost the district an extra $286,000 to add
to the structure, said Wright, then the city and county
should be willing to pay part of the cost.
"We will negotiate with the city and county before a
decision is made," he said.
