H. W. "Hap" McCune
"Misi Matuni"
Herman "Hap" Wright McCune was born June 30, 1906, in
Nephi, Utah, to George and Alice Ann Paxman McCune. His
grandparents were George and Sarah Elizabeth Wright McCune
and William Paxman (Juab Stake President at death) and Ann
Rushen Keys Paxman. The fifth of seven children, he died
peacefully January 18, 2006 at the South Valley Health
Center, West Jordan, Utah, at the age of 99, the last
surviving member of his immediate family. He is the
great-grandson of pioneers Matthew McCune, a Nephi resident
from 1857-1889, and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Caroline Scott,
a resident of Nephi from 1857-1877. All of them are interred
in the McCune Plot, Nephi City Cemetery.
After three years in Eureka, Utah, the family purchased a
home in Nephi and lived at 273 East 200 North. They lived
back and forth between the McCune Ranch in Mills and their
Nephi home until the late 1930's. At Mills, Hap attended a
one-room school and for two years enjoyed being taught by
his sister Leeta. His early years on the ranch fostered a
love for the soil and animals. As a very young boy he was
given many responsible jobs on the ranch, developing a work
ethic he exemplified throughout his life in providing for
his family as manager of RiteWay stores in Nephi and Sanpete
County and later co-owner of the Bailey-McCune hardware
stores with childhood friend Lee Bailey until the late
1950's. In further years Hap was an accountant and salesman.
He enjoyed being a representative for Shaklee products
during the latter years of his work life in association with
his only daughter Kathryn.
He and his younger brother moved to Nephi Central School
in about 1919. At Central School he was given the nickname
"Happy" because of his good nature. It was later reduced to
"Hap," the name by which he was known throughout his life.
In Nephi Junior High School he was recognized for his
outstanding voice and participated in many musical
productions, including the lead role in the high school
opera. He also was a member of the high school basketball
and track teams and was president of his senior class. He
graduated from Nephi High School and attended Utah State
Agricultural College and Brigham Young University before his
3 year 2 month mission to Samoa 1928-1932 for the LDS
Church. He had a very successful mission, endearing himself
to the natives by mastering the language as few visitors
were able, to the extent that he spoke the "chief language"
not commonly learned by the missionaries. He made a joyous
return visit to Samoa with his wife Grace on their 50th
wedding anniversary.
He was a faithful member of the LDS Church his entire
life and served in many callings, including branch
president, stake clerk, counselor in stake presidencies,
Juab Stake President after serving over a decade as a Juab
Stake Presidency Counselor, Sunday School Superintendent,
chorister, teacher, and High Counselor.
In his 20's and 30's, he and his younger brother Jim sang
duets at numerous wedding receptions, funerals, civic, and
church programs, and he gave service in quartets and as a
soloist for more than 30 years.
He married Grace Louise Jenkins on February 24, 1937, in
the Salt Lake Temple. They lived and raised their five
children mainly in Nephi, St. George, Pocatello, and Aurora,
Oregon. After retiring, they lived in Springdale and later
West Jordan, Utah.
His civic service included Ute Stampede Board of
Directors, organizing some of Nephi's outstanding parades;
Chairman of the Juab County Centennial Celebration;
scouting; Governor of the Utah-Idaho District of Kiwanis
International; and numerous other community activities.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters
and brothers Della Elizabeth M. Steed; Leeta Alice M.
Squire; Thomas Keys McCune; Dean George McCune; James Paxman
McCune; and Ruth McCune.
He is survived by his wife Grace of West Jordan, Utah,
and his children Kathryn M. Hurd of Estacada, Oregon; Tom
(Beccy) and Mark (Sandy) of Omaha, Nebraska; Richard (Joyce)
of Kearns, Utah; and Hal (Mary Ann) of Pendleton, Oregon; 15
grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He said, "The best counsel I could give to anyone or
anybody anywhere is we need to have faith and we need to
place trust in the Lord." When asked, "What has been your
greatest joy?" Hap replied without hesitation, "The service
I have given in the Church. Definitely!"
