  • Two Utah Guard Soldiers injured in January 5th Ramadi attack

Two Utah National Guard Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery, were injured in a suicide-bomb attack that killed dozens of Iraqi civilians in Ramadi Jan. 5.

Spc. Rick J. McClary and Spc. Braxton B. McCoy, both of Headquarters and Headquaters Battery, 2-222nd, were part of an Iraqi Police screening and selection team at the Ramadi Glass Factory when an individual detonated an IBED (improvised body-explosive device), killing himself, Iraqi civilians and wounding U.S. military personnel.

Both Soldiers were wearing the prescribed personal protective equipment to include Kevlar helmet, flak jacket with SAPI (small-arms protective inserts) plates, eye, throat, and groin protection.

McClary, St. George, sustained shrapnel wounds, and McCoy, Scipio, suffered two broken legs in the attack. Both were treated at the scene and then evacuated to local military medical facilities. One Soldier has since been transported to Germany for further treatment, and the other will soon follow.

Both are currently listed in serious but stable condition.

According to Maj. Sterling McMurrin, executive officer of the 2-222nd, medics from TF222FA (Task Force 222nd Field Artillery) were the first on the scene and began treating civilian and military wounded immediately.

Second Brigade Combat Team (2nd BCT), of which the 2-222nd is an element, continued screening operations once the scene was back under control about an hour later. Approximately 140 Iraqi Police recruits were processed yesterday, bringing the total for the week to over 600, far in excess of the initial goal of 200 recruits, said McMurrin.
