Mona City Council appointed a new council member to serve
as the fifth council member of the new city.
Aaron Painter will fill that position.
Painter was sworn into office by Nila Keyte, recorder,
on Tuesday at the conclusion of city council meeting. He was
the only applicant for the position.
"Your résumé was good," said Mayor Bryce
Lynn.
Council members agreed with the mayor's assessment.
"You sound like you have some qualifications that would be
helpful to Mona and the council," agreed Doran Kay, council
member.
Council member Darlene Fowkes said Painter had,
judging from his résumé, quite a bit to
contribute to the council. "He has more on his
résumé than I do."
Painter was requested to come to the end of the
council meeting so the council could interview him and, if
he was selected, vote to appoint him to the council.
"I have learned a lot at my job, which I think could
benefit Mona," said Painter. He works for South Utah Valley
GES, GIS, in Utah County and, in his employment works with
Santaquin, Payson, Springville, Spanish Fork, and Salem.
Painter will begin his duties as a council member at
the Jan. 23 meeting.
The newest member of the council was selected by the
council because it was determined after the election that
Mona was now a third class city, rather than a town. The
structure of the city council, as opposed to the structure
of a town council, calls for a mayor and five council
members.
The mayor will no longer have a vote on the council
except in cases where a tie needs to be broken. That might
occur when one council member is absent and the quorum is
split.
"The appointment is until January following the next
municipal election," said Lynn. "No one is appointed to more
than a two-year term."
